I don’t know about you, but I am what I like to call “solar powered.” I absolutely struggle through winter, because I live in a place where there is little sunshine in the winter months. Sometimes the winter can seem so long. Sometimes it seems like it sinks right down into your soul. A friend of mine recently shared a poem he wrote. It captured and expressed something deep within me that feels the tug to stretch and unfold into the springtime sun after a particularly long winter.

Settle Yourself: Release

Take a slow, deep, breath. Feel your shoulders rise as you breathe in and relax as you breathe out. While still breathing slowly and deeply, imagine the love and peace of God like warm water washing over you from head to foot. Breathe in the Spirit of God and breathe out all the burdens of the week.

Listen: Rest in the Word

Read this passage from the Psalms slowly. If you can, read it out loud. Read through it a second time, paying attention to words or phrases that stand out to you. Journal about which words or phrases stood out to you and what God might be trying to communicate to you through his Word. Read through it one more time and let it sink into your heart.

Psalm 1:1-3

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.

Reflect

Reflect on this poem by Sean Gladding.

A poem for a friend.

The mystery of
unfolding. Of leaves and lives,
released from winter’s
icy grip. No dead sticks these:
resilience clothed in green.

Pray

Thank You, God, for making us resilient. No matter how hard or long the winter is, the promise of spring follows close behind it. Help us to stretch our leaves and soak in the light of your love, that we might effortlessly bear the fruit of Your Spirit. Amen.
