RESET: Trust. It’s What We Do.

daily text logoDecember 21, 2014

Luke 2:1-5

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

RESET

fixedGod works out his plans, no matter what.

Something tells me Joseph and Mary had no idea they were going to Bethlehem in order to fulfill biblical prophecy given hundreds of years earlier.

Something tells me they thought they were headed to Bethlehem because Caesar required it.

Something tells me they knew something big was going on with this baby to be born yet I don’t think they had the slightest conception of the magnitude of it all.

They were doing their best to be faithful to God and get along in the world at the same time. Though Mary carried the Lord of Heaven and Earth in her womb, the lordship of Caesar seemed to carry the day.

Isn’t this how life is? We do our best to be faithful to God and get along in the world at the same time? And in the midst of that, God works out his plans. He uses the power of Caesar to fulfill his own prophecy.

Something tells me things were definitely not going according to plan for Mary and Joseph. They had no idea things were working out perfectly, just as God intended. Something tells me it took them years to come to that conclusion themselves.

That’s how life is. Things don’t seem to go our way yet God’s ways work out. Our lives aren’t where we thought they would be by now yet somehow God has us exactly where he wants us. Because our best laid plans failed, his purposes prevailed. It will take years for us to see it.

Something tells me somewhere along the way Mary and Joseph rememberized Proverbs 3:5-6.

We are working on that one at our house. You probably remember it as it is one of the classics.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path.

We do not understand the ways of God, and so we must not trust our understanding. We trust God with all our hearts. We acknowledge God in all of our ways. That’s who we are. That’s what we do.

Thanks Mary and Joseph for blazing the trail for us. Where would we be without you.

PEOPLE GET READY! JESUS IS COMING.

P.S. Speaking of Proverbs, we will be working our way through a few of them in the days of January. With 31 days in the month and 31 chapters of Proverbs it should be a good time. Invite some friends to join us. Bus leaves January 1.
