Leaning Forward into Late Life

Some people would look at the frail older woman’s life and say that she has much to grumble about and little to look forward to. But Inez sees it differently. In fact, she would agree with a spunky 86 year-old woman who once told me that she was frustrated with longtime friends who spent their days sitting around their apartments in their robes watching soap operas. The 86 year-old reprimanded her friends, saying, “You’re dead. You’re just not buried.”

Growth Through Grandparents

Relentless Grace Will Not Give Up

Love Chapel Hill is a church plant rooting itself in the cultural center of downtown Chapel Hill. Lead Pastor Matt LeRoy calls it “a beautiful collision of college students and homeless men; young professionals and families; artists, activists and academics.”

We believe that the most eloquent articulation of the Gospel is a love that gives itself away. This belief fuels our evangelism efforts and strategies. So we give ourselves away through “Strangely Warmed,” an initiative to collect and personally deliver warm winter clothing to our homeless friends. We orchestrate “piano drops,” leaving a piano on a busy street corner for artists to play and crowds to enjoy. Sounds weird, for sure, but in a creative town that draws artists and musicians from all over theSoutheast, it’s like speaking to them in their native language. We started “Grace on Wheels”—a partnership with the local Transit Authority providing neighbors in poverty with free […]

Come Holy Spirit, Part 5

How do you see the Holy Spirit at work in the world today? In part five of this series, we feature the dynamic answers of Ben Witherington III, Al Gordon, Stuart Townend, Thomas Oord, and Amy Oden.

Ben Witherington III– Professor at Asbury Theological Seminary, author of more than 30 books, and elected member of the prestigious Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas.

“On where do I see the Holy Spirit working, I would say in the Middle East. Muslims are having vivid dreams of Issah, Jesus, even Muslims who’ve never read a Bible or had real contact with Christians.  The Spirit is up to something, undercover, behind the scenes, imperceptibly, but nonetheless definitely.”

Al Gordon –Services Pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton and co-founder of Worship Central, an international worship training and resource center.

“Here in the UK and in other parts of the world where we are working, I see the Holy Spirit searching for servants […]

The Saturday Post on Gymnastics of the Spirit

My Mary Kathryn, 9, is getting involved in competitive gymnastics this year in a gym in Lexington. I spend one evening each week watching her at work. Equipment of all aeronautical sorts covers the expansive gym floor. The gymnasts systematically work from one station to the next doing their exercises.

These young men and women, with the instruction of the masters (i.e. their coaches), push the human body to infinity and beyond. Through a thousand falls and missteps and almost routine crash and burn efforts they discipline their bodies in the movements of grace. As I scan the gym floor, almost everyone is pulling an epic fail somewhere.

At the same time, the place almost constantly flashes with bursts of perfection. I’m not talking about the perfection of flawless performance. Flawless performance may or may not be present. I’m talking about the brand of perfect that happens when someone goes head long, […]

A Generation United for Freedom

Last week 45,000 young people, ages 18-25, gathered in Atlanta, Georgia to celebrate freedom in the name of Jesus at the Passion 2012 Conference. Centered on Isaiah 26:8 (“Yes, Lord, walking in the way of Your Truth, we wait eagerly for You, for Your name and Your renown are the desire of our souls.”), the Passion Movement has been growing since it began in 1997. The Passion team is led by founder Louie Giglio in a mission to spread the name of Jesus and spiritual awakening to college campuses around the globe.

This year the conference sold out, filling the Georgia Dome with 45,000 eager and excited students. Faced with the startling truth that 27 million men, women and children are the victims of slavery and human trafficking in the world today, these students took a stand to make a difference.

“This year at Passion 2012, we want to bring this darkness […]
