Bible Verses on the Ascension (NIV)

When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious— that you, Lord God, might dwell there. (Psalm 68:18)

This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way (Mark 13:26)

When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. (Luke 24:50-53)

“I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.” (John 7:33-34)

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)

“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” (Acts 7:56)

He exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.(Ephesians 1:20-21)

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(Hebrews 4:14)

And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. (1 Peter 3:21-22)

Quotes on the Ascension

“While in heaven he is also with us; and we while on earth are with him.” (Augustine of Hippo)

“Lord beyond our mortal sight, Alleluia
raise our hearts to reach thy height, Alleluia
there thy face unclouded see, Alleluia
find our heaven of heavens in thee, Alleluia.”
(Charles Wesley)

“At His Ascension our Lord entered Heaven, and He keeps the door open for humanity to enter.” (Oswald Chambers)

“Part of what [Ascension] means is that all the stuff that mattered about God becoming one of us still matters. His whole self, divine and human, ascends to the Father, and so Jesus is still God for us, fully God and fully human.” (Beth Felker Jones)

“The great commission is grounded in the authority of Christ’s ascension.” (Ben Patterson)

“The ascension is the linchpin of Christ’s saving work bridging his earthly and heavenly ministries . . .” (Robert A. Patterson)

“The ascension means that Jesus is King and humanity is exalted.” (Stephen Seamands)

Ascension Day and Sunday after Ascension Collects (Book of Common Prayer)

Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortlesss, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one god, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Sing Psalm 68 to a Metrical Psalter

There are at least three tunes which allow for easy adaption of the words from Psalm 68 to be sung. Ellacombe (Hosanna, Loud Hosanna); Forest Green (I Sing the Mighty Power of God);  Kingsfold (O Sing a Song of Bethlehem). View the sheet music and hear the melodies on the Psalter site here.

The early Christians believed that when Jesus ascended into heaven he had been installed and exalted as King, reigning as Lord of all. Today, it’s more tempting to view Christ’s kingship as only symbolic—as we treat contemporary British monarchs. With sin and suffering, pain and brokenness, evil and injustice all around, how dare we proclaim that Jesus is reigning now? So we push his kingship off into the future when he returns.

In The Unseen Real: Life in the Light of the Ascension of Jesus, Dr. Stephen Seamands explores the ascension of Christ, not as it relates to the past or the future but to the “here and now.”
