Psalm 89

Timothy Tennent

I will sing His love forever, with my mouth I’ll make Him known;
Faithfulness which leaves us never; His love is upon the throne!
You said “I have made a cov’nant with the chosen of my hand;
David is my chosen servant, his throne will forever stand.”

Heav’n above declares Your wonder, faithfulness ‘midst holy ones;
Who above compares in wonder? Who is like the Holy One?
In the council of the holy, God is greatly to be feared;
God Almighty, who is like You? For Your faithfulness, revered!

You rule o’er the surging ocean, You still all the raging sea;
You crushed Egypt with one motion; Your strong arm made Your foes flee!
Heav’n is Yours and earth below it, north and south are in Your sight,
/3Tabor, Hermon join in worship, Your right hand is full of might!

Your throne rests upon true justice; love and faithfulness You are!
Blest are those who walk as righteous, in Your light both near and far!
All day long we praise Your glory, we joy in Your holy name!
/8Your great strength is all our story, You our shield and king the same!

Once You spoke to us Your nation; David called with sacred oil;
You gave strength and consolation; Righteous king on Israel’s soil.
/2“My hand will sustain my servant; him to foes I’ll never bring;
I will strike his adversaries; crushing those against my king.

“Faithful love will rest upon him, through my name his horn is high;
/6His hand will be o’er the ocean; ‘Savior, God, my Rock,’ he’ll cry!
I will name him as my firstborn, over all the kings of earth;
/9Cov’nant love is his, I have sworn; His throne last from birth to birth.

/1“If his sons forsake my statutes, follow not my true decree,
/3I will slay those wicked, dead fruits, but from him my love won’t flee.
I’ll not turn from my commitment, never change what I have said;
Swearing truly is my intent; David’s line will ever spread!

“His throne will endure forever like the sun placed in the sky,
Parting from my love, O never; It will last and never die!”
But You’re angry with Your servant; You have spurned him, broke Your trust;
Lord, You broke Your word and cov’nant; his crown You have thrown to dust.

/1You have broken through his stronghold, all who pass have plundered him;
You’ve exalted foes, young and old; You’ve made foes rejoice o’er him.
His drawn sword has now been turned back; You forsook him in the fight;
His bright splendor has all turned black; his throne cast down from his sight!

You’ve cut short the days of his youth, covered him with cloak of shame;
How long, Lord? Your wrath burns like truth; How long will You hide Your name?
Know how fleeting is life’s measure; Futile are the ways of men,
Death will bring an end to pleasure; Grave will be our final end.

Where, O Lord, is Your great loving which You swore to him our King?
Don’t forget the sound of mocking, which the nations on him bring.
How the nations taunt You ever; how they mock Your chosen one;
But we praise the Lord forever; Amen till all time is done.
