Psalm 129

CM (86.86)
Timothy Tennent

1They have oppressed me from my youth,
Let Isr’el say to all;
2They have oppressed me from my youth,
Yet, have no vict’ry call!

3The plowmen have all plowed my back
and made their furrows long;
4But righteous is the Lord on high,
He’s freed me from their wrong!

5May all who view Zion with hate,
Be turned back in their shame;
6They’ll be like grass up on the roof,
Which withers in a flame!

7With it the reaper cannot fill
his arms or ev’n his hands;
8May those who pass by never say,
“The Lord has blessed these lands!”

1They have oppressed me from my youth,
Let Israel now say –
2They have oppressed me from my youth,
But no vict’ry have they!

3Though plowmen have upturned my back
with furrows long and deep;
4The Lord is righteous, and from cords
of wicked has me freed.

5May wicked ones who hate the Lord
all be turned back in shame;
6May they, like grass upon the roof
be withered without name.

7Not grass enough to fill the hands
of reapers gath’ring stores;
8May those who pass by never grant
the blessing of the Lord.
